Colds and Flus

The flu season is upon us, and no one wants to be home sick with the sniffles and coughs, not to mention stomach upsets. Flu shots are available at the doctor's office, in the drugstores, and almost everywhere. They can prevent most flus. The Center for Disease Control and the World health Org. select several strains of flu viruses for inococulation. However it is possible to catch other flus, and that is why some people say "I got my flu shot, and I caught the flu anyway".
I recommend prevention in other ways. Being aware of our hands and what they touch can prevent cross-contamination simply by washing the hands or using hand sanitizer. This is so important when eating in a restaurant. The menu for example is quite germy, more so than a toilet seat. After using one, either use hand sanitizer or wash the hands. Make sure your hands are clean whenever you eat or prepare food.
Touching door handles, money, keyboards, TV remotes, and grocery store carts are just a few of the things that can harbor cold and flu viruses. Even your daily mail or newspaper can make you sick if you aren't aware and practice prevention. Stay healthy, it's possible with a little effort.

Air Blower Versus Towel Dispenser

When using a public restroom that has both an air dryer and a paper towel dispenser, which method do you choose for drying the hands? A recent study compared the two ways to dry hands. It demonstrated that dry hands did not harbor harmful microbes, and that germs like water. Using the towel was preferable to air drying. Evidently when we rub our hands under the air dryer, we can cause a skin-to-skin friction that releases germs that live deep in the pores.
Choosing the towel is preferable also for good reasons. After washing the hands, a clean towel prevents cross-contamination with microbes left by prior users. When the dispenser is sensor-operated and handsfree, it guarantees it.

Healthy Tips

As we watch Haiti undergo one catastrophe after another, we ought to be grateful that we have the means to avoid some of their disasters. They are experiencing a Cholera epidemic in the north. Cholera is spread there by drinking contaminated water. Many other diseases are passed to others by germs on the hands.
This is especially important before eating, snacking, or preparing food.
The Center For Diseaese Control has said that proper handwashing can help prevent illness. One need not be a germaphobe. Simply being aware of what we touch, and washing or sanitizing the hands will prevent cross-contamination. Some of the things that harbor a medley of microbes left by others are: door knobs/handles, light switches, toilet handles, keyboards, money, elevator buttons, toys, books, and much more. Keep the hands clean to stay healthy.

Handsfree Towels

We often find that public restrooms provide towel dispensers that are touchless. They are sensor-operated, dispensing a clean towel without using the hands. Or they are center-folded with a towel lead so that one can pull down a clean towel without touching anything else. It is important to have that towel after washing one's hands and also perhaps to open the exit door. We appreciate that the establishment provided these towels so that we could leave the restroom with germ-free hands.
What about using towels at home after handwashing, especially before preparing food or eating? Using kitchen cloth towels for drying hands is OK but not sanitary. If you want to prevent cross-contamination before cooking, you need a clean paper towel to dry your hands. Preparing meat dishes, particularlly, requires clean hands in order to avoid e.coli contamination. I even use throw-away plastic gloves for this purpose.
A touchless towel dispenser is available for the home. Sensor-operated, it detects different perforations (full or half-sheet) and can sit on the counter or be wall-mounted, and comes in 3 finishes. It is the answer to a healthy kitchen.

Healthy Is As Healthy Does

Remember when your mother would remind you to brush your teeth? Well now we know how important good oral health is to the rest of the body. Heart and circulatory problems can be directly caused by inflammation stemming from gum infections. Floss the teeth that you want to keep.

Another good piece of advice is “get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night”, Teenagers need even more than that. Immune systems depend on adequate sleep. Brain functions can do poorly when sleep requirements are not met. Hey, falling asleep at the wheel can be fatal.

“Couch Potato” is a modern word. It seems that we got more exercise before due to less driving, more walking, and as part of our labor. The benefits of just 30 minutes of exercise per day are numerous. It promotes bone health, lung capacity, joint functioning, weight stability, good blood circulation, and more. It is even recommended to help prevent diabetes II. Walking doesn’t cost anything.

“You are what you eat,” How many times have you heard that one? Those who believe that and eat that way read the labels on cans and boxes, seek out organic produce, drink filtered water, and follow good nutrition guidelines. We are bombarded by toxins in our water, in our air, in our food, in our personal products and everything else. Our bodies can throw off these toxins if not overwhelmed. A healthy lifestyle is the answer to a good immune system.

Lastly, prevent infections and illness caused by cross-contamination. Those sensor-operated dispensers in public restrooms give you water, soap, and towels automatically and touchfree. You don’t have to handle toilet flushers or doors either. Keep up with vaccinations and shots when they are due. A good quality of life is a healthy life.
